On 6^th September 2024, Friday, Centre for Maritime Studies was honoured to host Mr Bo Wegener, CEO of CMA CGM Asia Pacific, as a guest lecturer for the MTM5001 Maritime Industry Fundamentals module.

In his lecture titled "The World of Container Shipping," Mr Wegener covered pivotal developments and challenges in the industry:

• Shipping as a Commoditised Business: He outlined CMA CGM's expansive global presence and discussed the consolidation within the industry, reducing the number of key players from 15 to 9, who now handle 83% of global shipping volumes.
• Digitalisation and Innovation: Mr Wegener emphasised the role of digitalisation in maintaining competitive advantage, introducing the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) as a driver of technological transformation.
• Decarbonisation: With sustainability a critical focus, he shared insights on zero-carbon fuels and the complexities of decarbonising the shipping industry, especially in the absence of a clear fuel pathway.
